Secret Recipe: KFC Famous Bowl

You want to know how to make a “secret recipe”?  Some Top Secret Recipes aren’t hard to make at all, and today we’re going to make the “KFC Famous Bowl” secret recipe!

Today is friday and I needed to make something quick because it was the end of the week and I was just dead tired.  I didn’t want to buy take-out or fast food and I wanted something good.  I happened to mention this to my wife who was already making dinner at work - and she suggested that I make the same thing “KFC Bowls”.  I guess at the restaurant they’re called “famous bowls”.  Kentuck Fried Chicken has a lot of “secret recipes” that they’re famous for, like the mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and especially the extra crispy and original recipe chicken!  These KFC bowls have only been around a few years, but they’re a big hit and I’ve eaten them for lunch a half dozen times.

When you order one of these from KFC basically the ingredients are mashed potatoes, popcorn chicken, sweet corn, gravy, and cheese!  You “could” make this entire dinner in your microwave (are you listening college kids??).  Tonight we made only the mashed potatoes on the stove and absolutely everything else in the microwave.  The entire dinner was made in 15 minutes, and this recipe feeds about 4 people very healthy sized portions.

Ingredients need for “KFC Bowls”:

  • 2 - 4oz packets any brand instant mashed potatoes, we like to buy one “cheese” and one “garlic”
  • 4 cups hot water
  • 6 tbsp margarine
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 can sweet corn
  • 1 lb of either frozen chicken nuggets or popcorn chicken
  • 1 jar Heinz or other brand “chicken gravy”
  • 1 - 8oz packet shredded colby-jack cheese

So putting these together is really simple.  In  medium pot add 4 cups hot water and 4tbsp of margarine.  Place on a large burner on the stove on high.  Put a dash of salt in the water.  Next grab a plate and put the chicken nuggets or popcorn chicken on it.  Put it in the microwave for 2 minutes on high.  Drain the corn and place in a microwaveable bowl with a pat of butter on top.  Salt and pepper.  Put your jar of gravy in another microwaveable bowl.  By this time your nuggets will be done.  Pull them out and place the corn in the microwave on 2 minutes on high.  When they’re done put the gravy in the microwave on 2 minutes on high.

When the water on the stove violently boils turn the burner off, empty both packets in and mix well.  Add the remaining 2 tbsp of margarine on top and salt and pepper to taste.  Get 4 bowls out for serving, and divide the mashed potatoes into the 4 bowls.  Then divide the chicken nuggets or popcorn chicken into the 4 bowls on top of the mashed potatoes.  Do the same with the corn, and then the gravy.  Last divide the shredded cheese sprinkling on the top of each bowl and you are done!  Dinner is ready to serve!

I hope you like these “top secret recipe” KFC bowls as much as we did tonight for dinner!
